The RCMP in Smithers are pioneering a new approach to policing during Pride celebrations, emphasizing inclusivity and understanding.
For the second consecutive year, Cst. Jocelyn Foidart has led efforts to create a trauma-informed safety plan for Pride. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the 2SLGBTQI+ community, ensuring that police presence is supportive and respectful of diverse identities.
Cst. Foidart highlighted the importance of building trust through collaboration with community members. This year’s Pride saw unprecedented participation, with activities like Pride Storytime at the library and a vibrant celebration at Bovill Square, all warmly received by the community.
Cst. Foidart expressed pride in the positive impact this collaboration is having. The RCMP is committed to continuing these efforts, learning from community partners at Smithers Pride and striving to create a safer and more inclusive environment for everyone.
This initiative marks a promising step forward in modernizing policing practices and advancing equity and diversity in Smithers.
