On the occasion of National Indigenous Peoples Day, Lax Kw’alaams has issued a poignant statement expressing deep concerns over proposed treaties between the Kitselas and Kitsumkalum First Nations and the Federal and Provincial governments. The press release, delivered by Mayor Garry Reece, highlights critical issues that could potentially impact Lax Kw’alaams’ rights, territory, and self-determination.
Mayor Garry Reece emphasized that while Lax Kw’alaams supports other First Nations pursuing self-government through treaties, they believe the current proposals threaten their own rights and territorial integrity. The main grievances outlined include inadequate consultation by the Crowns, lack of full disclosure of treaty terms, and violation of Tsimshian laws and historical agreements.
“At the heart of our concerns is the failure of the Crowns to meaningfully engage with us,” Mayor Garry Reece stated. “These treaties could significantly infringe upon our rights without our consent or proper accommodation, which runs counter to both international law and our own legal traditions.”
The press release underscores the importance of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) as enshrined in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, which Canada and British Columbia have pledged to uphold. Lax Kw’alaams insists that the Crowns must halt any further steps towards treaty initialing until these fundamental concerns are addressed.
The community of Lax Kw’alaams has been vocal in asserting their position, calling for transparent processes that respect their territorial boundaries and uphold their legal interests. They urge the Crowns to honor their commitments to Indigenous rights and engage in genuine dialogue to find equitable solutions.
