Over 1,500 households in Haida Gwaii and more than 140 households in Lach Klan (Kitkatla) now enjoy high-speed internet access.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Government of British Columbia’s Connecting British Columbia program and supported by CityWest, has brought faster, more reliable broadband services to residents of Haida Gwaii. This infrastructure upgrade not only enhances daily life with improved access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities but also strengthens cultural revitalization efforts within the Council of the Haida Nation.
Similarly, in Lach Klan on Dolphin Island, part of the Gitxaala Nation, the introduction of high-speed internet is set to revolutionize local access to digital services. Funded in part by the federal Universal Broadband Fund and bolstered by CityWest’s infrastructure deployment, this project empowers residents with unprecedented connectivity, bridging the gap between rural and urban digital access.
Both initiatives align with BC’s ambitious goal to provide high-speed internet to all households by 2027, ensuring equitable access to digital resources across the province. The investments not only support local economies and educational advancements but also uphold commitments to environmental stewardship and cultural preservation.
These milestones highlight a collaborative effort among government entities, service providers, and Indigenous communities, underscoring a shared commitment to building stronger, more connected communities throughout coastal BC.
