Prohibition on Open Fires and Fireworks in Effect from July 5
In anticipation of upcoming warm and dry weather conditions, stringent fire restrictions are set to take effect across several regions of British Columbia, Canada. Starting at 12 p.m. (noon) on Friday, July 5, 2024, the BC Wildfire Service will enforce prohibitions on Category 2 and Category 3 open fires in the Nadina, Bulkley, and part of the Skeena Fire Zones. This includes specific areas such as the Nadina Forest District and portions of the Skeena/Stikine and Coast Mountains Forest Districts.
Additionally, the restrictions extend to fireworks, including firecrackers, and sky lanterns across public and private lands in the affected zones. These measures are crucial to mitigate the risk of wildfires amidst expected warmer temperatures and reduced moisture levels.
Exceptions to the ban include Category 1 campfires, which must not exceed half a meter in height and width, as well as cooking stoves fueled by gas, propane, or briquettes.
Individuals found violating the prohibition face substantial penalties, including fines up to $100,000 and potential imprisonment if convicted in court. Moreover, those responsible for starting wildfires due to prohibited activities may be liable for firefighting costs and damages.
For more information on safe fire practices and the definition of Category 2 and Category 3 open fires, residents are encouraged to visit the BC Wildfire Service website.
