The Esk’etemc, formerly Alkali Lake Indian Band, secured a $147 million dollar settlement today with the Canadian government, acknowledging the loss of water rights dating back to the late 1800s.
This agreement compensates for over a century of denied access to water for agriculture in Indian Reserve Number 6 (IR #6), impacting economic opportunities and community sustainability.
Chief Fred Robbins spoke with CFNR and talks about the settlement’s significance in addressing historical injustices and supporting future planning for the Esk’etemc.
“The opportunities were taken away from us because they removed our water,” says Robbins.
He adds that the community plans inclusive engagement to determine how best to utilize the funds, aiming to benefit both current and future generations. This milestone not only marks a step forward in reconciliation efforts, Robbins says, but also highlights the community’s resilience and determination to restore their rights and build a prosperous future.
