Last week, key meetings between Haida Nation leaders and federal ministers marked a significant step forward in Canadian-Indigenous relations. Federal Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Gary Anandasangaree emphasized ongoing support for Bill S-16, which seeks to formally recognize the Haida Nation’s governance rights and the Council of the Haida Nation as its governing body. The bill, currently in its third reading in the House of Commons, has strong backing from the federal and provincial governments as well as the Haida Nation.
Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault discussed sustainable practices with the Haida Nation, focusing on renewable energy, Guardians programs, and marine conservation efforts. Notably, the Great Bear Sea Project for Finance Permanence (PFP) was highlighted, showcasing a collaborative approach to marine conservation involving multiple First Nations and government entities.
The long-standing partnership between the Haida Nation and the Canadian government has already led to significant achievements, including the co-management of Gwaii Hanas National Park Reserve. Discussions are underway to explore further conservation opportunities within Haida Territory.
