Smithers merchants are expressing frustration over a planned power outage by Hydro that is set to disrupt their operations next Tuesday, August 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The outage is intended to facilitate the replacement of a power pole, affecting approximately 140 customers and 130 residential lots.
Business owners, including Theo Bandstra of Home Hardware, argue that the outage will result in significant revenue losses and a day of missed work for employees. Bandstra likened the situation to theft, criticizing Hydro for imposing a financial burden on local businesses.
Hydro, however, is reconsidering the outage due to the current heatwave and its potential impact on workers. According to Hydro’s policies, maintenance work is only rescheduled if it affects public health or safety.
Mike Kellett, a spokesperson for Hydro, acknowledged that no time is ideal for a power outage but emphasized that they are scheduled only when absolutely necessary. Hydro typically plans outages during off-peak times to minimize disruptions, such as weekends or overnight. Bandstra contends that the pole replacement is not an emergency and could be rescheduled to avoid economic strain on businesses.
Hydro expects to make a final decision on the outage by mid-week.
