In response to the ongoing heatwave, the District of Kitimat is opening a cooling centre at Tamitik Arena, starting Wednesday, August 7. The centre will operate daily from 12:00 to 8:00 p.m. through Friday, August 9. It will provide a cooled space, water, snacks, and public WiFi, with District staff available to assist. Additionally, BC Transit will be free during these dates to facilitate access to the centre.
For alternative cooling options, residents can visit two community wading pools, open from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. on sunny days and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. The wading pools, located near Heron Street and Chilko Street, are free to use and include shaded seating areas. They will remain open until August 18.
The Kitimat Visitor Information Centre offers an air-conditioned space with washrooms, an elevator, and outdoor seating in the adjacent park. It is open Monday to Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and weekends from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The Riverlodge Recreation Centre, open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., provides on-site showers and an indoor environment to escape the sun, though it is not air-conditioned. Admission rates apply.
The Kitimat Public Library, while not air-conditioned, offers a quiet indoor space. Residents can check the library’s website for specific hours.
The Kitimat Museum & Archives, open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., provides a cool indoor setting along with exhibits on local history and an art gallery.
For those who prefer to be outdoors, shaded areas like Minette Bay West Park offer relief from the sun.
Residents, particularly those in vulnerable groups such as seniors, individuals with health conditions, and those living alone, are encouraged to take necessary precautions during the heat. If your home becomes excessively hot, visiting one of these cooling options may be advisable.
