Residents of Dawson Creek and area, an important health alert from
Northern Health and the First Nations Health Authority regarding a dangerous new substance in our community. There has been a rise in overdoses linked to a chunky purple drug being sold as “side.”
This drug has been causing sudden and severe overdoses, often requiring multiple doses of naloxone to reverse. Health officials are strongly advising everyone to take several precautionary steps to stay safe. It’s crucial to get trained in overdose prevention and response and to always carry naloxone. Avoid using drugs alone and make sure you have a buddy who knows your plans and can call for help if needed. If you do use drugs alone, consider using safety apps like Lifeguard or BeSafe, or contact the National Overdose Response Service at 1-888-688-6677.
Be mindful of your tolerance, especially if you’ve been sick or have had a period of reduced use, as you might need to use less. It’s also important to avoid mixing drugs with alcohol and to start with a small amount if you decide to use. Whenever possible, use the Overdose Prevention Site in Dawson Creek for added safety.
The local Overdose Prevention Site is located at 1001 110 Avenue and operates daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
This alert is in effect until August 29th. Stay informed and take care of yourselves and each other.
