The Government of Canada and Gitanyow Nation are collaborating on a new salmon hatchery on the Kitwanga River, aiming to boost the declining Kitwanga sockeye salmon population. Announced today by Fisheries Minister Diane Lebouthillier, the hatchery will be built by the federal government and operated by Gitanyow Nation, with construction set to start this fall.
The hatchery will focus on raising Kitwanga sockeye salmon, crucial for conservation and of deep cultural significance to the Gitanyow people. This initiative is part of the Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative (PSSI), which funds projects to restore and protect Pacific salmon populations. The new facility underscores a commitment to conserving genetic diversity and rebuilding historical salmon stocks.
Simogyet Malii/Glen Williams of the Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs Office expressed hope that the hatchery will restore strong sockeye returns to the river, reflecting ongoing conservation efforts. Minister Lebouthillier highlighted the importance of partnerships with Indigenous communities in safeguarding salmon for future generations.
