In an Aug 13 statement Minister of Forests Bruce Ralston expressed strong disapproval of the U.S. decision to double duties on Canadian softwood lumber.
Today Minister Rolston spoke with CFNR and He warned that this will significantly impact B.C.’s forestry sector, leading to higher costs, job losses, and economic strain on communities. Ralston emphasized that this dispute, rooted in differences between Canadian public land and U.S. private land practices, has persisted for decades. Despite Canada’s arguments that the industry isn’t subsidized, the U.S. has imposed these higher duties. The Canadian government is challenging these measures through trade agreements and seeking additional support for affected workers and businesses. He also noted that rail strikes are worsening the situation by disrupting lumber transport.
