The provincial government has announced plans to build 22 new on-reserve housing projects, totaling 667 homes, through the Building BC: Indigenous Housing Fund. This initiative aims to address the urgent need for affordable and culturally appropriate housing for Indigenous communities in the region.
The new homes will be distributed across several Northern communities, with Burns Lake, Gitlax̱t’aamiks, Gitwinksihlkw, Laxg̱alts’ap Village, Lower Post, Skidegate, and Takla Landing each receiving a share.
Burns Lake will see the construction of 18 homes in partnership with the Lake Babine Nation, while Skidegate will gain 24 new homes in collaboration with the Skidegate Band Council. These projects are part of a broader effort to provide stable and culturally supportive housing options for Indigenous people both on and off reserve.
This funding, part of a larger $1.7 billion investment by the province, is aimed at fostering resilience and stability within Indigenous communities by addressing the critical housing shortages that many face. By investing in these Northern projects, the province is not only providing much-needed homes but also supporting ongoing reconciliation efforts and strengthening the communities that will benefit from these new developments.
