In B.C., the Province has granted an extension to the District of Kitimat, giving the community additional time to meet new housing requirements. Originally set to comply with updated zoning bylaws by June 30, 2024, Kitimat now has until December 31, 2030, to fully implement the changes.
This extension comes as part of a broader provincial effort to increase the availability of affordable housing by requiring local governments to amend their zoning rules. The new legislation mandates that communities allow for more row homes, triplexes, and townhouses to meet the growing demand for middle-income housing. In Kitimat’s case, the delay is needed due to ongoing infrastructure upgrades necessary to support these new housing developments.
As of mid-September 2024, over 91% of B.C. local governments have already adopted the new small-scale multi-unit housing legislation, showing significant progress towards creating more housing options across the province. The extended deadline for Kitimat reflects the community’s unique challenges and aims to ensure that the transition to new zoning bylaws does not compromise public safety or infrastructure integrity.
