The City’s development arm, Prince Rupert Legacy Inc., has signed a lease option for 79 acres on Watson Island with Hy2gen Canada Inc., a renewable energy company. The project aims to develop a green energy export initiative on the brownfield site.
This move is part of the city’s strategy to diversify its economy and enhance its tax base. The green energy project is expected to contribute to British Columbia’s economic growth and climate objectives while providing sustainable revenue for Prince Rupert.
Hy2gen AG, based in Germany, has a Canadian subsidiary in Montreal and operates a hydrogen facility in Germany. The company is also involved in various projects across Europe and North America. Hy2gen is optimistic about the potential of the Prince Rupert site, citing the city’s attributes and its strategic location for accessing the Asian market.
