A new Food Security Centre has opened in Gitanyow, aimed at strengthening community independence and preserving traditional knowledge. Built through a partnership between the Gitanyow Huwilp Society and the Prince Rupert Port Authority, this facility features a large commercial kitchen and a walk-in cooler designed to store and process wild and farmed foods as well as traditional Indigenous medicines.
Located along a major hunting corridor, the Centre can hold six to eight moose or other large game, providing a safe space for community members to manage their harvests. The Centre is expected to create opportunities for cultural, educational, and skills training programs for all ages in the community.
The Prince Rupert Port Authority’s Community Investment Fund contributed one hundred and eight teen thousand five hundred dollars to the project, part of a larger commitment to supporting food security initiatives across the northwest region. The Centre not only promotes food safety but also serves as a hub for sharing traditional practices and enhancing community well-being.
