The new state-of-the-art hospital in Terrace has officially been given a Tsimshian name, Ksyen Regional Hospital (KUH-see-yen). The name recognizes the land on which the facility stands and the community it serves. Ksyen, meaning the Skeena River in the Sm’algyax language of the Tsimshian people, was chosen following discussions between local First Nations and municipal leaders. The Kitsumkalum First Nation proposed the name, which was later approved by the Northern Health Board and the Province.
Northern Health will soon hold a ceremony with the Kitsumkalum and Kitselas First Nations to honor the significance of the name. In addition to the Tsimshian name, the hospital will recognize the contributions of Dr. Stanley Mills, the man credited with bringing healthcare to the community. Dr. Mills will be honored with a history wall, and the new Ambulatory Care Unit will bear his name.
Northern Health has worked closely with local First Nations throughout the hospital’s development to ensure the new facility is culturally safe and welcoming. The new hospital, located at the north end of the current hospital grounds, is nearing completion and is set to open in the coming months.
