The Nisga’a Nation is mourning the loss of Chief Sim’oogit Hay’mass Chester Moore, who passed away peacefully this morning at the age of 88. A cultural icon and respected leader, Chief Moore dedicated his life to preserving and promoting Nisga’a traditions.
Born in Kincolith in 1936, he later made Canyon City his home, where he became a self-taught scholar, artist, and composer. He wrote over 30 Nisga’a songs, many of which are widely performed by cultural dance groups. Chief Moore also played a significant role in founding these groups, ensuring the continuation of traditional practices for future generations. He was instrumental in shaping *Hobiyee*, the annual Nisga’a New Year celebration, which has become a cornerstone of cultural pride.
Chief Moore’s influence extended beyond the arts. As Chief Councillor, he led key projects that transformed his community, including building a meeting hall, church, and clinic. His contributions earned him the Order of British Columbia and widespread respect among First Nations along the coast.
Surrounded by family in his final days, Chief Moore leaves a legacy of love, leadership, and cultural preservation. His family will release details about funeral arrangements in the coming days. The Nisga’a Nation deeply mourns his loss.
