On November 15, the Lax Kw’alaams community unveiled a new memorial to honor local veterans at the Lax Kw’alaams Wap Suwilaawksa. The tribute recognizes veterans from World War I, World War II, the Gulf War, the Canadian Rangers, and others who served in various military capacities.
The project, led by the Tsimshian Arts and Culture Society in Prince Rupert, was made possible with funding from Veterans Affairs and the Lax Kw’alaams Band. Designed by artist Lianna Spence, the monument features a poppy design intertwined with the four main Tsimshian Crests and a central Moon design titled Opza dip Ko’olt, meaning “Lest We Forget.” This moon symbolizes the nights many veterans spent overseas, gazing up at the same sky to stay connected to their homes.
The memorial also includes artwork by Frederick Alexcee and Betty Sampson. Alexcee’s piece represents the Hereditary Chiefs, while Sampson’s work symbolizes the Matriarchs of the community. On the back, the iconic poem In Flanders Fields is engraved, further honoring the sacrifices made by veterans.
The ceremony included the playing of the Last Post and a blessing from community leaders, marking the memorial as a lasting tribute to the brave men and women who served their country.
