A hiker who went missing in northeastern BC’s Redfern-Keily Provincial Park has been found alive after surviving for over five weeks in freezing temperatures. Sam Benastick, 20, had been reported missing on October 17 after failing to return from a 10-day camping trip. Despite an extensive search, which was called off on October 28, Benastick’s parents continued searching the area.
On November 26, Benastick was discovered by workers on a service road near a gas well site. He was weak and wrapped in a cut-up sleeping bag for warmth but was still alive. Temperatures in the area had plunged below -20°C during his ordeal.
Benastick was taken to hospital in Fort Nelson, B.C., where he is recovering and awaiting his parents. His rescue has brought relief to his family and the local community, who had been following the search closely.
