B-C’s businessperson says he’s concerned that people will be left
without funds for food and shelter during the holiday season, as last
month’s social assistance cheques have yet to be delivered due to the
Canada Post strike.
Jay Chalke says the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty
Reduction has taken some steps to distribute cheques, but last week the
province indicated that 40 per cent of last month’s hard-copy cheques
still hadn’t been delivered.
Chalke says the ministry should have had an effective plan for
distributing the cheques, given what he describes as the widely reported
risk of a postal strike.
The delay has prompted Chalke’s office to launch an investigation
into the ministry’s handling of the distribution of social assistance
cheques during the strike, including its contingency plans ahead of time
The next payment is supposed to be on December 18th 2024.
