Starting December 4, LNG Canada’s Kitimat facility will see a dramatic increase in flaring, with flames expected to reach up to 20 meters. This is part of ongoing testing, including Incinerator Burner testing and flare winterization, and will occur intermittently over the next 14 to 60 days. The flare size fluctuations are a normal part of the facility’s two-year commissioning process, which began in September with the first natural gas delivery from the Coastal GasLink pipeline.
Residents of Kitimat have already seen changes in flaring levels, with a significant reduction in visible flames in November as operations progressed. LNG Canada assures the community that the heightened flaring is temporary and necessary for safe operations. The company is committed to keeping local residents and the BC Energy Regulator updated on any changes during the commissioning period.
LNG Canada encourages residents with questions or concerns to contact them directly.
