The City of Prince Rupert has approved significant increases to utility fees for water, sewer, and solid waste services, affecting residents over the next four years. Starting in 2025, water utility fees will rise by up to 5% annually, reaching $710.61 by 2028, up from $562.87 in 2024. The cost of connecting new homes to the water system will also increase, jumping from $2,600 to $4,500. Additionally, residents will face a new $50 fee to temporarily turn off or on their water service.
Solid waste fees will increase by 6% annually, with costs reaching $680.45 by 2028, up from $538.97 in 2024. These increases are tied to a new liquid waste disposal facility and other waste management updates. The liquid waste fee will also rise from $75.50 to $80 per tonne.
The biggest increase will be seen in sewer and stormwater fees, which will rise 16% annually. By 2028, these fees will total $958.40, up from $529.32 in 2024. The city has also raised connection fees for sewer services, with costs increasing to $4,500.
City officials acknowledge the financial burden on residents but suggest that potential future revenue streams could help ease some of the fee increases.
