Rogers Communications has completed the installation of five new cellular towers along British Columbia’s Highway 16, providing 5G coverage and improved 911 access for travelers. This marks the near completion of a major project to expand cellular service along the route, with nine of 11 towers now in operation. The new towers cover 166 kilometers of the highway, closing much of the gap between Prince Rupert and Prince George.
The project, which includes towers built on remote mountain peaks, aims to increase safety along the highway, especially for Indigenous women and girls, addressing a key recommendation from the 2006 Highway of Tears Symposium. Once finished, the project will provide 252 kilometers of continuous cellular coverage across the 720-kilometer corridor. Rogers has worked with local Indigenous communities and governments to expand wireless access in rural and remote areas, a key part of its broader commitment to improving connectivity in underserved regions.
