Bank of Montreal customers in Kitimat and 100 Mile House are faced with a choice: stay with BMO or move their banking elsewhere.
The bank has announced it will be closing its branches in these two communities later this year.
The 100 Mile House branch, a part of the community for 50 years, is set to close its doors on June 27.
Kitimat’s branch, which opened in January 1952 as the first bank in the area, will shut down in July.
For Kitimat customers who choose to remain with BMO, the closest branch will now be in Terrace—a significant commute for banking services.
The closures follow BMO’s acquisition of Bank of the West, finalized in February 2023, with a system conversion completed last September.
Such acquisitions often lead to consolidation, reducing overlapping staff, services, and facilities.
Despite the closures, BMO customers will still have access to services through ATMs.
To avoid fees, customers are advised to use ATMs within BMO’s network. Additionally, some transactions can be managed by requesting checks, transferring funds, or getting cashback at participating retailers.
