Sonia Furstenau has announced she is stepping down as leader of the BC Green Party. After much reflection, Furstenau believes the decision is the right one for her, her family, and the future of the party. During her time as leader, Furstenau helped secure historic investments in housing, healthcare, and mental health through a Green-NDP agreement, while also advocating for the protection of old-growth forests and climate action.
Furstenau’s political journey began with a grassroots fight to protect the Shawnigan watershed and evolved into a broader movement for justice and sustainability across the province. While stepping down from her leadership role, she remains committed to the BC Green Party and will continue supporting its work. MLA Jeremy Valeriote will serve as interim leader during the transition. Furstenau encouraged supporters to stay involved and help carry the movement forward.
