On Wednesday, the NDP called on Minister of Health Mark Holland to use the upcoming provincial and territorial health ministers’ meeting in Halifax to finalize overdue pharmacare agreements and expand dental care for Canadians aged 18 to 65. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh and Health critic Peter Julian urged the minister to act swiftly, emphasizing that the federal government has the necessary legislation and funding to implement these vital healthcare expansions.
The NDP has long advocated for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), which has already helped over 1.3 million Canadians access dental care. However, the program’s expansion has been delayed, with millions still waiting to benefit. Singh and Julian pressed the government to seize the opportunity to finalize agreements with provinces and territories to deliver universal access to contraception and diabetes medications as well.
The NDP warns that without immediate action, the federal government risks breaking its promises to Canadians.
