The Government of Canada is investing over $109 million to enhance marine safety and environmental protection through the Oceans Protection Plan. Part of this funding supports the Council of the Haida Nation and the Gitga’at Nation in strengthening their role in coastal monitoring and emergency response.
Through the Enhanced Maritime Situational Awareness initiative, both nations will gain improved access to real-time marine data, bolstering their ability to protect local waters. The funding also supports hiring marine coordinators in Indigenous communities, ensuring stronger participation in marine safety efforts.
Since 2016, the Oceans Protection Plan has worked to make shipping safer, protect marine ecosystems, and increase Indigenous involvement in coastal management. This latest investment reinforces Canada’s commitment to reconciliation and collaboration with Indigenous communities to safeguard the country’s oceans for future generations.
