Gitxaała Nation is voicing strong concerns over Kitselas First Nation’s decision to hold a treaty ratification vote on April 10 without a protocol agreement in place. Gitxaała leaders argue the treaty grants Kitselas rights to lands and resources within Gitxaała’s traditional territory, impacting their Aboriginal title and future resource allocations.
Despite efforts over the past 18 months to engage Kitselas in discussions, the first substantive meeting between the two Nations only took place on February 6, leaving little time for resolution before the vote.
Gitxaała questions why, after 30 years of negotiations, Kitselas is rushing to ratify without addressing these outstanding issues. The Nation has formally raised concerns with both the provincial and federal governments, calling for meaningful dialogue before the treaty moves forward. Gitxaała remains committed to protecting its territorial rights and ensuring fair and respectful negotiations.
