The Tahltan Nation has voiced frustration over the BC government’s decision to fast-track the approval of two major mining projects in their territory without prior consultation. On February 4th, the government announced plans to expedite the Eskay Creek Revitalization Project and the Red Chris Mine Expansion, which cover Tahltan lands. This decision was made despite formal joint decision-making agreements between the province and the Tahltan Central Government.
Tahltan leaders, including President Beverly Slater and Chiefs Marie Quock and Richard Jackson, emphasized that the province’s actions contradict commitments to reconciliation and fail to respect Tahltan rights and consultation processes. The agreements, signed in 2022 and 2023, require proper engagement and the free, prior, and informed consent of the Tahltan Nation. The Tahltan are committed to upholding these agreements and ensuring their rights are respected throughout the decision-making process.
