The Similkameen Women’s Basketball team claimed victory at the 65th Annual All Native Basketball Tournament in Prince Rupert, overcoming the challenges of traveling over 1,400 kilometers for the week-long event. Head coach Andrew Genie credited the team’s preparation, noting that while the long journey posed no major issue, the team’s focus sharpened once they arrived. Genie explained that many players were familiar with the tournament, having participated before, which helped them handle the travel and competition with confidence.
Defensive strength played a key role in their success, as Genie praised the players’ dedication to their defensive game plan. The team’s chemistry also grew stronger as the tournament progressed, with valuable time spent together, both on and off the court, reviewing film and refining strategies. Genie also highlighted the crucial support from family members who traveled to Prince Rupert to cheer on the team, which added to their sense of unity and motivation.
Additionally, Genie expressed his support for the inaugural Women’s Masters Division, recognizing it as a significant step in expanding opportunities for women in basketball. He praised the competitive nature of the event and was excited to see women continue to have the chance to play at a high level.
