The Government of Canada has launched the $5-billion Indigenous Loan Guarantee Program, aimed at helping Indigenous communities access capital for natural resource and energy projects. The initiative, launched through the Canada Indigenous Loan Guarantee Corporation, will provide up to $5 billion in loan guarantees, making it easier for Indigenous groups to pursue ownership and equity in resource development projects.
In addition, the government announced a $6.2-million investment in seven Indigenous-led energy and forestry projects in British Columbia through the Indigenous Natural Resource Partnerships (INRP) program. The funding supports initiatives such as the development of a 100% Indigenous-owned geothermal energy facility in Fort Nelson First Nation and decarbonization projects led by the First Nations Climate Initiative.
These efforts are designed to ensure that Indigenous communities share in the economic benefits of natural resource development, creating jobs and long-term opportunities. Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Jonathan Wilkinson, emphasized that the program will help build lasting economic prosperity for Indigenous communities, while advancing sustainable and renewable energy solutions.
