The Fort Nelson First Nation’s Tu Deh-Kah (TDK) Geothermal project has received a significant boost with $1.2 million in funding through the federal government’s Indigenous Natural Resource Partnerships (INRP) Program. Announced by Minister Jonathan Wilkinson on February 21, 2025, the funding is part of a broader $6.2 million allocation for seven First Nations-led projects in B.C.
The TDK project, which aims to harness geothermal energy from abandoned gas wells 14 kilometers southwest of Fort Nelson, will use the funding for gas well testing, environmental studies, and permitting. The clean energy produced is expected to power around 10,000 homes.
This project, owned by the FNFN’s economic arm, Deh Tai Limited Partnership, is in its fourth planning stage and is expected to begin construction later this year. The initiative is seen as a key step toward energy security and sustainability for the region.
