A new RCMP building in Prince Rupert is expected to be ready by spring, located at the corner of McBride Street and 3rd Avenue East. This project has been in the works for nearly two decades, with Mayor Herb Pond noting that the federal government first urged the need for a new facility 20 years ago, when he was in office for the first time.
The $25 million project was funded through local taxes and a loan, but Pond emphasized that efforts were made to minimize the impact on taxpayers. The city has managed to fund the project without causing significant financial strain on its citizens, who number over 12,000.
Looking ahead, the city plans to address the aging Prince Rupert Fire Department building, which will require a substantial investment of approximately $400-450 million. This will involve seeking funding from both provincial and federal governments.
