Northern Health has issued a Toxic Drug Alert for Prince George after a colorless liquid sold as GHB tested positive for fentanyl. This substance has been linked to symptoms of increased sedation, confusion, and opioid poisoning. Users are urged to exercise caution, as the fentanyl contamination can affect individuals using the substance by any route.
For safety, Northern Health recommends overdose prevention training and carrying naloxone. It’s advised to avoid using substances alone and to inform a trusted person who can call for help if needed. If using alone, the Lifeguard or BeSafe apps can be used, or individuals can call the National Overdose Response Service at 1-888-688-6677. Users should also be mindful of their tolerance, especially after a period of abstinence or reduced use, and avoid mixing substances, particularly with alcohol.
For those seeking local support, overdose prevention sites are available in Prince George, including the Needle Exchange and Two Doors Down, with harm reduction supplies and drug testing services offered.
The alert is in effect until March 7, 2025.
