The federal government is investing over $156.8 million in eight electrical infrastructure projects across British Columbia, aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and promoting sustainable communities. The funding, part of the Green Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and expanding clean energy.
Key projects include BC Hydro’s North Coast Electrification initiative, which will increase the capacity of the 500-kilovolt transmission line from Prince George to Terrace, supporting growing electricity demand. In Surrey and Duncan, infrastructure will be built to fully electrify Surrey Hospital, BC Cancer Centre, and Cowichan District Hospital.
Additionally, projects in the Peace River region will electrify Westcoast Energy’s CS16 facility and NorthRiver Midstream’s Dawson processing facility with new transmission lines. Investments in transmission infrastructure will also support areas like Hudson’s Hope, Dawson Creek, and Fort St. John.
The investment will reduce costs for major facilities and help maintain affordable electricity rates. The federal government’s commitment to these projects underscores its focus on building cleaner, more resilient infrastructure for communities and industries across the province.
