As of March 12, Tesla chargers, energy storage batteries, and inverters are no longer eligible for rebates under B.C. Hydro’s electric vehicle (EV) charger rebate program. The program, which offers up to $350 for the purchase and installation of home EV chargers, has excluded Tesla products in response to U.S. tariffs. However, individuals who purchased or received pre-approval for Tesla products before March 12 are still eligible for rebates.
B.C. Energy Minister Adrian Dix stated that he requested the change after reviewing the province’s rebate programs. He emphasized that Tesla products should not be eligible for public subsidies due to ongoing U.S.-Canada trade tensions, with the goal of prioritizing Canadian-made goods in the rebate program.
Tesla vehicles were already excluded from the province’s electric vehicle subsidy program due to changes in eligibility criteria made last year. This exclusion aligns with efforts to limit subsidies to more affordable vehicles.
The move is part of a broader initiative to reduce the impact of U.S. tariffs on Canadian products and strengthen support for made-in-Canada goods. B.C. Hydro has not yet responded to questions about whether more Tesla products will be excluded from other rebate programs.
