As bears wake from hibernation, B.C. residents are urged to take precautions to avoid unwanted encounters. Angelika Langen of Northern Lights Wildlife Sanctuary advises securing garbage, locking up pet food, and removing bird feeders to prevent hungry bears from wandering into yards.
Campers should store food properly, using secure containers or hanging it in trees. Hikers are encouraged to carry bear spray, know how to use it, and make noise to alert bears of their presence. Bear spray should only be used as a last resort if a bear acts aggressively.
Early sightings have been reported around Williams Lake, with more bears, including mothers with cubs, emerging soon. If encountering a mother bear, it’s crucial to back away slowly and avoid sudden movements or loud noises.
By taking simple precautions, people and bears can coexist safely this spring.
