The B.C. government is taking steps to stabilize BC Hydro electricity rates, keeping increases below inflation while ensuring long-term energy security.
Rates will rise by 3.75% annually over the next two years, adding about $3.75 per month for the average household. Despite the adjustment, BC Hydro’s rates remain among the lowest in North America, roughly half of what Albertans pay. The increase will support critical infrastructure, including the Site C hydroelectric project and new renewable energy developments, as demand grows from population increases, housing expansion, and industry.
To strengthen the power grid, BC Hydro is investing $36 billion over 10 years, creating 10,000 jobs and expanding supply to power over one million homes. Additional support is available for those facing financial hardship through BC Hydro’s Customer Crisis Fund, which is receiving an extra $1.9 million to assist approximately 4,700 households.
The government says this plan ensures affordable, reliable power while supporting economic growth and clean energy initiatives. The new rates take effect April 1, 2025, and April 1, 2026.
