Following recent house fires in Terrace and Thornhill, fire officials are reminding residents to take precautions to prevent future incidents. Thornhill Volunteer Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Coordinator, Capt. Brent Dawe, stresses the importance of working smoke alarms, home escape plans, and safe cooking practices.
Many house fires start due to unattended cooking, overloaded electrical outlets, or improper use of heating equipment. Fire officials urge residents to test smoke alarms monthly, replace batteries as needed, and ensure alarms are installed on every level of the home. Families should also have an escape plan with two exits from every room and a designated meeting place outside.
In the kitchen, cooking should never be left unattended, and grease fires should be smothered, not doused with water. Flammable materials should be kept away from stoves and heaters, and extension cords should never be used for major appliances.
With fire risks increasing during colder months, officials emphasize that prevention and preparedness can save lives. Residents are encouraged to review fire safety practices to protect their homes and loved ones.
