The Village of Telkwa is exploring the possibility of switching to biweekly garbage pickup. This potential change aims to reduce waste and encourage more recycling, aligning with the community’s broader Integrated Community Sustainability Plan. Last summer, the village council directed staff to consult with residents about the proposal.
Mayor Leroy Dekens highlighted the significant cost savings, noting that reducing the frequency of pickups would save time, money, and reduce wear and tear on collection vehicles. The change could also help manage resources more effectively, particularly given rising costs and tipping fees in the regional district.
The sustainability plan, developed with input from the community, also includes initiatives for green space, eco-friendly infrastructure, sustainable housing, and improved waste reduction programs.
An open house for residents to learn more and provide feedback is scheduled for April 2 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the village office. While the idea is still under consideration, Dekens encourages the public to stay informed and keep an open mind about the potential changes.
