Residents of Fort Babine now have improved access to high-speed internet and expanded cellular services along Fort Babine Road, significantly enhancing their ability to access emergency services and online opportunities. The new infrastructure will provide 47 households with wireless high-speed internet and nearly six kilometres of enhanced cellular coverage on Fort Babine Road, supporting both safety and connectivity.
George Chow, Minister of Citizens’ Services, emphasized the importance of reliable cellular and internet services for safety and economic development. “The completion of this project ensures people can access emergency services while traveling and go online for healthcare, education, and economic opportunities,” he said.
The project was made possible through a $2 million investment by the Government of British Columbia, with Telus contributing over $230,000. Telus, which built and operates the infrastructure, partnered with Lake Babine Nation to improve connectivity in the region. Chief Wilfred Adam of Lake Babine Nation expressed gratitude for the initiative, highlighting its potential to enhance safety and help people stay informed.
Since 2017, the province has invested $584 million to expand connectivity, bringing high-speed internet to 74% of rural homes and over 83% of First Nations communities. With ongoing projects, this coverage will reach 96% in Indigenous communities.
