Pierre Poilievre has announced a plan to remove the GST from Canadian-made cars, a promise first made by Jagmeet Singh a week earlier. While Poilievre’s move mirrors Singh’s commitment, it falls short of addressing the broader needs of workers facing job risks due to U.S. tariffs.
Both Poilievre and Mark Carney have declined to improve Employment Insurance (EI), despite growing concerns from workers impacted by the tariffs. In contrast, Singh has committed to expanding EI benefits by increasing the benefit rate, eliminating the one-week waiting period, and extending coverage duration for those at risk.
Singh emphasized that his focus is on supporting working and middle-class Canadians, particularly in the face of unfair tariffs from President Trump. “This election is about who stands with you when the pressure’s on—and we’ll always put working and middle-class Canadians ahead of billionaires and corporate lobbyists,” Singh said.
