Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is calling for the removal of the GST on Canadian-made cars to help protect the auto industry and workers affected by U.S. tariffs. In response to President Trump’s 25% tariff on Canadian-made vehicles, Poilievre’s proposal would make it easier for Canadians to buy homegrown cars by saving them $2,500 on a $50,000 vehicle.
Poilievre also unveiled the “Keep Canadians Working Fund,” a temporary loan program designed to help businesses hit by the tariffs. The fund would provide up to $3 billion in low-interest loans to keep businesses running and workers employed.
The plan includes a call for provincial governments to remove their own sales taxes on Canadian-made cars, which could save consumers up to $7,500 on a new vehicle. Poilievre says the measures are crucial to protect Canadian jobs and industries and to counter what he calls an unfair attack on the country’s economy.
The proposal aims to provide immediate relief to consumers while supporting workers in communities across Canada.
