The BC Wildfire Service, in collaboration with Saulteau First Nations, is set to conduct a prescribed burn this weekend in the Dawson Creek area. Preparation for the burn may begin as early as Thursday, April 3, with the main burn scheduled for Saturday, April 5, weather permitting. The burn will cover roughly 100 hectares of grass on Saulteau First Nations Reserve Lands. The goal of the burn is to reduce the risk of grass fires while providing cross-training opportunities for BC Wildfire Service and Saulteau First Nations staff.
Residents of Saulteau First Nations, Moberly Lake, Chetwynd, and travelers along Highways 97 and 29 may notice smoke during the burn. However, the prescribed burn will only proceed if conditions are safe. BC Wildfire Service personnel will monitor and control the burn to ensure safety at all times.
Prescribed burns are a key tool in wildfire management, helping to reduce the intensity of future wildfires by managing fuel loads. The BC Wildfire Service works closely with various partners to carry out these burns under carefully planned conditions to protect communities and the environment.
