Today, hereditary and elected leaders of Lax Kw’alaams signed a Governance Accord, marking a significant step towards a unified governance model. This agreement combines traditional leadership with elected officials in a shared decision-making process aimed at protecting and preserving the territory. The Accord paves the way for the introduction of a proposed written Constitution, which has been years in the making through extensive community consultation.
The proposed Constitution will establish a legal framework for governance, blending the ancient laws of the Allied Ts’msyen Tribes with modern structures. It affirms the tribe’s inherent right to govern its lands and resources and outlines rights and responsibilities for future generations.
The leadership emphasized that the Constitution reflects the values and needs of the community and will enable Lax Kw’alaams to move beyond the limitations of the Indian Act. A referendum will soon be held to approve the Constitution, which is seen as a key step in securing the self-determination of the Lax Kw’alaams people and ensuring future generations govern with unity and respect for tradition.
