Today, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh announced a bold plan to tackle Canada’s housing crisis, aiming to build 3 million homes by 2030—doubling the current pace. The plan focuses on accelerating construction, protecting existing rental properties, and training skilled workers to meet the demand.
Singh criticized past Liberal and Conservative governments for prioritizing profits over people, making homeownership unaffordable for many Canadians. The NDP’s proposal includes a $16 billion national housing strategy, replacing the Liberal Housing Accelerator Fund with the Canadian Homes Transfer and the Communities First Fund. These initiatives will give cities and provinces the tools they need to build homes faster, protect affordable rentals, and reduce costs for families.
The NDP’s plan also includes stronger rent protections, measures to prevent renovictions and price gouging, and a focus on using Canadian-made materials and modern construction methods. Singh’s strategy aims to train over 100,000 skilled workers, including newcomers and those affected by trade wars.
Singh stressed that electing New Democrats means affordable housing, stronger protections for renters, and good jobs in every community. “We’re here to change the system that’s failed too many,” Singh concluded.
