As part of Tsunami Preparedness Week (April 13-19), Prince Rupert is encouraging residents to get prepared with a fun ‘High Ground’ selfie contest. The event, co-hosted by Prepared BC, aims to spread awareness of tsunami safety and preparedness across the community.
Participants can enter by answering daily emergency preparedness questions posted on the City of Prince Rupert’s Facebook page and by submitting a selfie at one of the designated “high ground” locations. These locations include spots like the corner of Dry Dock Road and 6th Avenue East, the Rec Complex, and even your own home, as long as you don’t live on Beach Place or Water Street.
Mayor Herb Pond emphasized the importance of heading to high ground during a tsunami warning, as residents may not immediately notice water surges at the shoreline. MLA Tamara Davidson also highlighted the importance of preparedness for coastal communities.
The contest offers several emergency preparedness prizes, donated by Prepared BC, with the draw taking place on April 20. For full details, including where to take your selfie and how to participate, visit princerupert.ca.
