The referendum on the Da’ax Kw’alaams Man-Ayaawx Constitution for the Lax Kw’alaams First Nation concluded on April 9, 2025. A total of 1,093 members cast their votes, but the proposal failed to meet the required 60% approval threshold for ratification. 550 members voted against the constitution, which would have come into effect on September 30, 2025, if passed.
As a result, the Lax Kw’alaams Band will not move forward with the constitution at this time. Despite this setback, the band remains committed to ongoing community engagement, transparency, and collective governance. The focus will shift to future opportunities for shaping the nation’s direction in alignment with the values and aspirations of its membership.
The band thanked all members who participated, emphasizing the importance of each voice in this significant decision-making process. The Lax Kw’alaams First Nation will continue to work toward strengthening its governance and exploring new avenues for growth and unity.
