The hereditary and elected leaders of the nine Allied Ts’msyen Tribes of Lax Kw’alaams and the Lax Kw’alaams Band have issued a joint statement reaffirming their unity and commitment to self-governance following the recent constitutional referendum. Although the proposed Da’ax Kw’alaams Man-Ayaawx Constitution was not ratified, leadership emphasized that the April 3 Governance Accord remains in full effect.
They announced plans to move forward with a hybrid governance system that combines traditional leadership with elected representation. This new structure aims to protect Laxyuup—Ts’msyen lands and resources—and uphold title and inherent rights against outside threats.
The statement acknowledged the community’s call for more dialogue and participation, with leaders committing to engage members, gather input through a survey, and revitalize the Amlahaw Peoples’ Voices Initiative. A Chief Negotiator will be hired, and a new institution will be launched to support the Allied Tribes’ branch of government.
Leadership says this is a step toward stronger, more inclusive governance rooted in tradition and driven by the will of the people. They thanked all who voted and pledged to keep listening as they build a better future together.
