Today marks the ninth anniversary of B.C. declaring the toxic-drug crisis a public health emergency. Since then, thousands of lives have been lost to poisoned drugs, leaving lasting grief in communities across the province. Minister of Health Josie Osborne acknowledged the complex factors that contribute to substance use, including trauma, poverty, and stigma. She emphasized the need for a compassionate, care-first approach to end the crisis, highlighting the importance of reducing judgment and improving access to support and recovery services.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reflected on the ongoing tragic impact of the crisis, noting a slight decline in overdose deaths over the past year. However, she stressed the need for continued support, including harm-reduction measures like naloxone and safe drug testing, to save lives. She also pointed out the increasing toxicity and unpredictability of street drugs, urging innovative solutions and unwavering commitment to the crisis. Both leaders reiterated the need for more action to support those struggling with substance use, reduce stigma, and help people find their way to recovery.
